There’s something very satisfying about a properly finished garden edge.
Whether it’s around a lawn, gravel path or planting bed, a clean line can make the whole garden feel that bit more considered.
We’ve recently added British-made Corten and galvanised steel edging to the Broxwood Collection, so here’s a quick look at the difference between the two and where each one works best.
CORTEN OR GALVANISED?
The biggest difference is simply the look.
Our Corten Steel Garden Edging develops a warm, rust-coloured patina as it weathers. It sits particularly well alongside gravel, stone, timber and plenty of planting, and is a good way of tying things together if you already have Corten planters elsewhere in the garden.
Galvanised Garden Edging has a cleaner silver-grey finish. It feels a little more understated and works particularly well alongside lighter paving, gravel and more contemporary planting schemes.
Both are strong, long-lasting options, so there really isn’t a right or wrong choice. It comes down to what works best with the rest of your garden.
3MM OR 6MM?
We offer both finishes in 3mm and 6mm steel.
For most gardens, 3mm edging is a great all-rounder. It works well around lawns, borders and paths, while still giving you enough flexibility to create gentle curves.
Our 6mm edging is much more substantial and suited to larger landscaping projects, longer runs or areas where you want something particularly robust.
Essentially, it’s a case of choosing how much muscle the job needs.
STRAIGHT LINES OR CURVES?
One of the nice things about steel garden edging is that it can work with both.
Use it to create crisp straight lines through a more formal garden, or let it follow the shape of curved lawns and planting beds for something softer.
The 3mm edging is the better choice if you’re planning tighter curves, while the heavier 6mm option naturally suits straighter runs and broader sweeps.
The sections join together with steel stakes, making it easy to build up the length you need.
WHERE CAN YOU USE IT?
Pretty much anywhere you want one part of the garden to stop gently making its way into another.
It works particularly well between lawns and borders, alongside gravel paths, around planting areas or between different landscaping materials.
Corten is lovely if you want the edging to become part of the overall look of the garden, while galvanised steel tends to sit quietly in the background and let the planting do the talking.
WHICH WOULD WE CHOOSE?
If you like warm, weathered finishes and natural materials, Corten is difficult to beat.
If you prefer something cleaner and a little more understated, galvanised is probably the one.
Either way, both are made in England as part of our Broxwood Collection and designed to do a simple job properly for many years to come.
And sometimes it’s those smaller details that make the biggest difference.
