Description

Available in three standard sizes (specifications below) with bespoke options available, our made to order weathering steel planters make terrific statements.

Perfect for adding height or a point of interest in a private or commercial setting. The design is simple... the steel is long-lasting... and the finish improves with age.

Each planter is crafted using a blend of precision engineering and hand-finishing. Each one is assessed by eye to ensure character, quality and consistency that you can see and feel.

Every planter is made to order in our partner workshop in rural Worcestershire – just a few miles from Tom’s Yard. This process takes just around 2 weeks and as soon as your order is ready, we will be in touch to arrange delivery.

How It's Made, Care, Drainage etc...

How it’s made

Our planters are made from weathering steel. They are robust, heavy and made to last – they resists corrosion by developing a protective rust layer when exposed to the elements.

The workshop laser cuts each individual element. We then use our large steel plate rolls to roll the sides to create a sweeping curve. While we use heavy machinery to do this, it is worked by hand and judged by eye.

The base and sides are then welded together to form the pot.

Weathering steel

Often called COR-TEN® steel (although this is actually a brand name), weathering steel is durable, low maintenance, and develops a beautiful, natural patina over time. The steel resists corrosion by developing a protective oxide layer when exposed to the elements – it is this which gives it its unique aesthetic – a natural rust finish which gets better with age. It also means your planters will blend beautifully with your garden.

Your planter will be supplied un-rusted, this will start to happen as soon as it is exposed to the elements. We can accelerate this process, if required. Just let Thomas know.

Drainage

The planter is designed so the base is raised two inches off the ground. It can sit on any surface without the need for feet or risers. Drainage holes will be drilled into the base of your planter before it is dispatched.

Matching set

Ordering multiple planters and want a cohesive set? Then you’re in expert hands. Our planters are precision engineered, so they’ll be identical in size and shape. The only difference you might notice is in how the steel weathers. Sun, wind and rain vary by location, so some planters may develop their patina faster than others. We think this just adds to their charm and character.

Care

You don’t need to do anything! Your weathering steel planter can stay outside, exposed to the elements all year round. How come? Because this exposure causes the surface of the steel to start rusting, this oxide layer forms a protective layer which, over time, seals the steel underneath and protects it from moisture and oxygen which are needed for further rusting. This protective patina slows down future corrosion significantly, without the need for any paint or coatings.

Galvanized

Prefer a galvanized finish? Then ask Thomas. Once made, the planter can be sent to another local business to be galvanized. Galvanizing is a process where a layer of zinc is applied to the steel to protect it from the elements.

Nationwide Delivery

Our workshop charge £95 including vat, per pallet for kerbside, weekday delivery. This standard fee excludes Scottish and off-shore locations. For these, please get in touch for a quotation.

How many planters can fit on one pallet?

Up to 2 raised base planters or up to 4 full depth bases can stacked on to one pallet.

Support Local

Crafted in a workshop just over the border from Tom’s Yard in Worcestershire. Even the British steel is purchased from here in the county. Every planter ordered benefits at least three businesses, employing more than 20 staff, collectively.

Support British industry

At Tom's Yard we try to do our bit by working with as many independent British suppliers as possible. All of our metalwork (furniture, planters and plant supports!) is sourced through small workshops based across Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Leicestershire. We think that's pretty awesome.
