Description

A clever alternative to a traditional planter, combining the architectural presence of Corten steel with the growing benefits of planting directly into the ground.

Part of our Broxwood Collection, bringing together exceptional garden products made by skilled workshops closer to home, our bottomless round planters are handmade to order by professional fabricators.

Unlike a conventional container, the Broxwood Bottomless has no base. Once positioned over prepared ground, plants can establish directly into the soil beneath, allowing their roots to spread naturally beyond the confines of the planter. This is particularly useful for larger shrubs, ornamental grasses and specimen trees, while also helping plants access moisture deeper within the ground.

Available in ten standard size combinations, from a low 60 × 20cm ring through to substantial 120cm diameter planters, the simple cylindrical form works beautifully within both traditional and contemporary gardens. Use them to add height within a border, frame a pathway, contain ornamental grasses or give a specimen plant greater presence within the landscape.

Each planter is made to order from 2mm structural-grade Corten steel as standard. Supplied initially in its raw steel state, exposure to the elements gradually develops the characteristic orange, russet and deep brown patina that makes Corten so distinctive. This weathered surface forms a protective layer over the steel beneath, creating a durable and exceptionally low-maintenance garden feature.

Every planter arrives fully assembled and ready to position. Simply prepare the soil beneath, place the planter into position, fill as required and plant through into the open ground below. Bespoke dimensions and heavier steel gauges of up to 6mm are also available for more demanding planting schemes and commercial projects.

Made specifically for your order, the typical delivered lead time is approximately 2–4 weeks, with standard delivery to mainland England and Wales included in the price.

Simple, architectural and brilliantly practical – the Broxwood Bottomless Planter gives you the presence of a substantial Corten container without restricting what can grow beneath it.

How Long To Go Rusty?

My Corten products are dispatched in a raw steel finish as standard.

It will take up to 12 months for the steel to develop its final rusted look & protective layer, but it could be as soon as 6 months if your garden's conditions are just right!

This process depends on factors such as weather, climate, your proximity to the coast (sea spray) etc...

Bespoke Sizes

If our standard sizes aren't quite right for your space, don't worry. We're delighted to offer a bespoke service, allowing our workshop to manufacture many of our products to your exact requirements.

Simply get in touch using the enquiry form on this page and let us know what you have in mind. The more information you can provide, the better we'll be able to advise and prepare a quotation tailored to your project.

Thickness

As standard, planters supplied in the Corten Range are made from a 2mm thick, structural-grade steel. Water features are generally upgraded to a thicker 3mm.

However, depending on your intended use - if you would like to order an item made from a thicker, more substantial steel (up to 6mm thick), then please get in touch and I can source a quotation.

I would suggest upgrading the thickness if you are:-

  • Planting anything heavy
  • Located in a windy spot
  • Are near the coast
  • Planning on using these in a commercial setting

A heavier grade planter will always last longer.

Maintenance & Notes

Maintenance

Corten steel requires no maintenance as the rusted patina it naturally forms acts as a protective barrier meaning there’s no need for painting or sealing. Depending on the environmental exposure, Corten steel’s lifespan can exceed 50 years thanks to its self-protecting rust layer, which is why it’s ideal for outdoor applications.

Notes

During the natural weathering process, your piece may produce ‘runoff’ that could cause staining on the surface below. This risk is particularly high during the first three to six months of the weathering process. Keep an eye out if these needs washing off a new patio.

Please note that, once production has started, the workshop may not be able to accommodate changes to an order.

Once you have received your planter or water feature, please unpack it straight away. Planters left palletised or packaged may develop an uneven patina if exposed to moisture or rain.

Warranty

5 year manufacturer's structural warranty.

What is Corten Steel?

Corten steel is highly durable and resistant to corrosion. It develops a unique rusty patina that enhances its look over time and this layer protects it further from changing weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor use.
