Description

A simple, budget-friendly way to introduce the warmth of weathered steel into the garden – British made, bottomless and cleverly supplied flat-packed.

Part of our Broxwood Collection, bringing together exceptional garden products made by skilled workshops closer to home, these planters are manufactured to order in the Midlands.

Designed as a more affordable alternative to our fully welded planters, the simple construction uses four folded steel panels which bolt together at the corners. This keeps manufacturing and delivery costs down while creating a strong, attractive planter with a slightly more industrial character.

Importantly, these planters are bottomless. They are designed to sit directly onto soil, gravel or an existing flower bed, allowing plants to root naturally into the ground below. This makes them particularly useful for raising planting within borders, containing more vigorous plants or simply adding height and structure to a planting scheme.

Choose Your Steel

We offer this planter in two different grades of steel, allowing you to choose between affordability and maximum longevity.

Mild Steel – The Budget-Friendly Option

Our standard version is manufactured from 2mm hot-rolled mild steel. Left outside, the surface naturally oxidises to develop the warm orange and brown rusty appearance associated with weathered steel. It's a fantastic way of achieving the look for less.

Unlike Corten, ordinary mild steel doesn't develop the same stable protective patina. It will therefore continue to corrode gradually over its lifetime. For a bottomless garden planter made from substantial 2mm steel, it can still provide many years of useful service, but it isn't designed to offer the same longevity as genuine Corten.

Corten Steel – The Premium Option

Upgrade to premium quality Corten steel for a planter specifically designed for long-term outdoor exposure.

Corten initially rusts in much the same way as mild steel, but its special alloy composition allows it to develop a more stable protective patina. This protective surface significantly slows further corrosion, giving you the characteristic rusty appearance alongside considerably greater longevity.

Visually, both options develop that lovely warm, weathered finish. The principal difference is longevity – choose mild steel for the most economical option, or invest in Corten if you want a planter designed to remain part of the garden for considerably longer.

Available in a selection of useful square sizes, they look particularly effective grouped together or used to introduce different heights and levels within a planting scheme.

Every planter is made specifically for your order, with an approximate 2-week lead time from order through to delivery. Mainland UK delivery is included in the price.

Simple, sturdy and exceptionally good value – choose mild steel for an affordable weathered planter or premium Corten for considerably greater longevity.

How Long To Go Rusty?

My Corten products are dispatched in a raw steel finish as standard.

It will take up to 12 months for the steel to develop its final rusted look & protective layer, but it could be as soon as 6 months if your garden's conditions are just right!

This process depends on factors such as weather, climate, your proximity to the coast (sea spray) etc...

Bespoke Sizes

If our standard sizes aren't quite right for your space, don't worry. We're delighted to offer a bespoke service, allowing our workshop to manufacture many of our products to your exact requirements.

Simply get in touch using the enquiry form on this page and let us know what you have in mind. The more information you can provide, the better we'll be able to advise and prepare a quotation tailored to your project.

Thickness

As standard, planters supplied in the Corten Range are made from a 2mm thick, structural-grade steel. Water features are generally upgraded to a thicker 3mm.

However, depending on your intended use - if you would like to order an item made from a thicker, more substantial steel (up to 6mm thick), then please get in touch and I can source a quotation.

I would suggest upgrading the thickness if you are:-

  • Planting anything heavy
  • Located in a windy spot
  • Are near the coast
  • Planning on using these in a commercial setting

A heavier grade planter will always last longer.

Maintenance & Notes

Maintenance

Corten steel requires no maintenance as the rusted patina it naturally forms acts as a protective barrier meaning there’s no need for painting or sealing. Depending on the environmental exposure, Corten steel’s lifespan can exceed 50 years thanks to its self-protecting rust layer, which is why it’s ideal for outdoor applications.

Notes

During the natural weathering process, your piece may produce ‘runoff’ that could cause staining on the surface below. This risk is particularly high during the first three to six months of the weathering process. Keep an eye out if these needs washing off a new patio.

Please note that, once production has started, the workshop may not be able to accommodate changes to an order.

Once you have received your planter or water feature, please unpack it straight away. Planters left palletised or packaged may develop an uneven patina if exposed to moisture or rain.

Warranty

5 year manufacturer's structural warranty.

What is Corten Steel?

Corten steel is highly durable and resistant to corrosion. It develops a unique rusty patina that enhances its look over time and this layer protects it further from changing weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor use.
