Broxwood Corten Steel Bottomless Trough / Raised Bed
Description
The Broxwood Bottomless Trough Raised Bed is a stylish and practical way to introduce structured planting into a garden. Its clean rectangular shape and warm rust-coloured finish work beautifully in both modern and traditional surroundings, whether used to define a border, divide different areas or create an attractive raised display.
Made from heavy-duty Corten steel, the trough gradually develops a rich, natural patina when exposed to the elements. This distinctive weathered surface does more than provide character—it also forms a protective layer that helps defend the underlying steel against further corrosion. A pre-weathered finish is available for those who want the established Corten appearance from the outset.
The open-bottomed design is intended to be positioned directly onto soil. This allows excess water to drain naturally while giving roots the freedom to extend into the ground beneath, helping plants access additional moisture and nutrients. The generous trough shape is suitable for growing flowers, ornamental grasses, herbs, vegetables and compact shrubs.
Handmade in Britain by skilled fabricators, the planter is supplied fully assembled and requires very little ongoing maintenance. Combining durable construction with a beautifully evolving finish, this Corten steel raised bed creates an enduring focal point that will become more attractive as it matures within the garden.

How Long To Go Rusty?
Depending on the time of year your items arrive - it will take up to 12 months for the steel to develop its final rusted look & protective coat. But it could be as soon as 6 months if your conditions are just right!
The process ultimately depends on factors such as weather, climate, cover, your proximity to the coast (sea spray) etc...
Can they be supplied rusted?
Absolutely!
As standard our Corten products are supplied in their raw state. But recently we have worked out the costs to cover what's involved in effectively ''pre-weathereing'' your corten products.
To make it super simple, there is a 10% surcharge to have an item pre-patinated prior to dispatch. i.e. so that it arrives as if it has already sat outside for 6 months.
So - for example - it would cost £76 to have an item worth £760 treated... £50 for an item worth £500... you get the idea!
Do note that it takes 3 coats of treatment, with a day drying between each coat for the process to be properly carried out. So if you would like us to treat your items, please be aware that it will add approximately a week to the lead-time of your order.
Do you offer bespoke sizes?
If our standard sizes aren't quite right for your space, don't worry. We're delighted to offer a bespoke service to meet your exact requirements.
Simply get in touch using the enquiry form on this page and let us know what you have in mind. The more information you can provide, the better we'll be able to advise and prepare a quotation tailored to your project.
Thickness
As standard, planters supplied in our Corten Range are made from a 2mm thick, structural-grade corten steel. Water features are upgraded to a thicker 3mm.
Depending on your intended use - if you would like to order an item made from a thicker, more substantial steel (up to 6mm thick), then please get in touch and we can source a quotation.
In a normal residential setting - 2mm is perfectly fine - however you may consider upgrading if you are:-
- Near the coast
- Planning on using corten products in a commercial setting
A heavier grade planter will last longer.
Maintenance & Notes
Maintenance
Corten steel requires no maintenance as the rusted patina it naturally forms acts as a protective barrier. There’s no need for painting or sealing.
Depending on the environmental exposure, Corten steel’s lifespan can exceed 50 years thanks to its self-protecting rust layer, which is why it’s ideal for outdoor applications.
Notes
During the natural weathering process, your piece may produce ‘runoff’ that could cause staining on the surface below. This risk is particularly high during the first three to six months of the weathering process. Keep an eye out if these needs washing off a new patio.
Please note that, once production has started, the workshop may not be able to accommodate changes to an order.
Once you have received your planter or water feature, please unpack it straight away. Planters left palletised or packaged may develop an uneven patina if exposed to moisture or rain.
Warranty
5 year manufacturer's structural warranty.
What is Corten Steel?
Corten steel is highly durable and resistant to corrosion. It develops a unique rusty patina that enhances its look over time and this layer protects it further from changing weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor use.
