The Benefits of Hardwood Logs
Hardwood logs are often preferred over softwood for burning because of how they behave in a stove or fireplace, especially once properly seasoned or kiln-dried.
They burn longer and more steadily.
Hardwoods like oak, ash, and beech are denser than softwoods. That higher density means the wood burns more slowly, giving a longer-lasting fire and a more consistent heat output.
They usually give more usable heat per log.
Because hardwood contains more mass in the same volume, a single log typically provides more heat overall than a softwood log of the same size.
They produce less smoke and fewer sparks.
When properly dried, hardwood tends to burn cleaner and more calmly. Softwoods often contain higher resin content, which can cause popping, sparking, and more visible smoke.
They’re better for overnight or long burns.
Hardwood logs are ideal when you want the fire to last—such as overnight in a stove—because they hold embers for longer and don’t burn away as quickly.
Woodsure Ready To Burn Certified
Woodsure Ready to Burn Certification is a UK scheme that guarantees wood fuel is dry enough to burn cleanly and efficiently in domestic stoves and fireplaces. It was introduced as part of the government’s efforts to improve air quality and reduce harmful smoke emissions from household solid fuel burning.
The certification applies mainly to firewood, kindling, briquettes, and other wood fuels sold in small volumes (under 2 cubic metres). To qualify as Ready to Burn, the fuel must have a moisture content of 20% or less. Wood that meets this standard lights more easily, produces more heat, and creates far less smoke and soot than wet or unseasoned logs.
The scheme is administered by Woodsure Ltd, on behalf of the UK government (Defra). Suppliers who join the scheme are independently checked to make sure their fuel meets the required standards. Approved products can display the official Ready to Burn logo, giving consumers confidence that the fuel is legal to sell and suitable for immediate use.
For consumers, the certification makes it easier to choose cleaner, better-quality fuel. For suppliers, it ensures compliance with UK regulations and promotes responsible wood fuel production. Overall, the Ready to Burn scheme plays an important role in cutting air pollution while helping households get the best performance from their wood-burning appliances.

Hogs Back Logs, a family business for 20 years
Hogs Back Logs is a family run business, which Ray started in 2005 under ‘Anglesey Farm Logs’, in order to diversify his agricultural business, R J Simmons Agricultural Services Ltd, which he started in 1981. At certain times of the year the work is done and the logs business compliments the farming.
Since October 2019 his son Ryan has been given the responsibility of running this part of the business but Ray is still advising and delivering logs.
