Armillary spheres were developed by the Ancient Greeks as teaching tools. In more precise forms, they were used as observational instruments as models of objects in the sky. The spherical framework of rings, centered on the Earth or the Sun, represented lines of longitude and latitude.
The Sphere simply rests on the column however it can be screwed down. Most models feature a sphere that has rusted as it doesn't take long for them to develop that look when exposed to the elements at Tom's Yard.
