You've planted all your Spring bulbs but the pots are looking a little bland and lacking interest so what to do?
Bedding plants have a bit of a bad rep amongst some gardeners but they are a truly incredible way to add colour to your Spring pots over the Winter season. Plants such as pansies, violas, cyclamen are perfect pot companions as they are hardy little things and will withstand most frosts and light snow fall.
If you're really not feeling plants as toppers you can also use natural materials for plant toppers such as crushed shell or grit.
The possibilities are endless so at Tom's Yard we have picked a few of our favourite toppers to share with you

We spoke in last weeks article about the importance of colour in your garden and especially in your pots, so if you have cooler colours running through your garden then having bright block yellow pansies would probably clash a little. Do not worry though there are some stunning pansies on the market that would be beautiful additions to your existing colour schemes.

A classic crisp touch

White in the garden is quite a versatile colour and can add pops of class and fresh crispness to your displays. These white pansies are just that, a very classy addition to your pots.

The cottage garden vibe

I think it is fair to say that the cottage garden style is one of , if not the most popular style across so many gardens now. The cottage garden style is bursting out of rural England and taking hold of newbuild gardens, elements appearing on balconies and adorning the townhouse garden everywhere. The beauty of terracotta pots is that you can achieve a gorgeous cottage garden vibe anywhere really. Which is why we are loving the Viola 'Peach Shades' from Sarah Raven. All the pastel vibes and the dainty but bountiful flowers will make those Autumn to Spring displays look gorgeous.

The plant alternative

We adore topping our pots with Shell on Earth. This product is recycled crushed whelk that not only adds a stunning top layer to your pots but can also be mixed into your compost for extra drainage. The packs come in all different sizes right up to bulk options if you have some sizeable terracotta pots to top.

You can buy pansies as ready grown plants, like those above, for that instant gratification but if you're looking for a challenge and access to an even greater variety of pansies and violas then you can always try seed! You can sow pansy seeds July - September for winter flowering displays, we appreciate this is a little late this year but seeds keep amazingly well and it's always good to think about your growing spaces a couple of seasons ahead!

Italian ruffles perfect for Italian pots

In our quest for beautiful plant toppers we stumbled across an exquisite variety from Plants by Distinction. A variety of pansy that has a semi-ruffle and really brings those pinky tones to life with elements of terracotta and salmon, simply stunning and something a little different which we LOVE at Tom's Yard.

Cool Violas

The palette of creams and purples with some flecks of pink may be more your station on the colour wheel and these violas are perfect for it.

Not all about the pansies and violas

Other plants such as cyclamen, heathers and even erigeron also work really well as plant toppers so you're not confined to pansies and violets.

Thomas's Top Tip

If you topping a planted bulb lasagna then it's a good idea to reduce the amount of bulbs you use on your layers. This reduces the risk of overcrowding, bad air circulation and the flowers all naturally fighting for space and leads to an all round better Spring display.
REMEMBER - The larger the pot, the better the display
