As we transition from Winter into Spring, our pots can be looking a bit drab and not bring us the joy we so desperately need after enduring one million days of January and Spring still feeling a million more away. Shoots and new growth are teasing us as they wake up from their slumber and the promise of Spring colour is on the horizon but what about right now!?
Megan Green from Hayloft Plants has the solution and has shared 5 absolutely beautiful plants you can add to your pots to not only bring joy, happiness and a little bit of sparkle into your life now but give you some year-round colour.
First up is this fantastic evergreen with stunning bi-coloured, silvery foliage. Over time this beautiful shrub will grow to around 4m x 2.5m and will live perfectly happy in the Torricelli Italian Trough making a wonderful statement plant, you could even clip it as a decorative hedge! The foliage is so pretty that it'll brighten your spaces in Winter and then when May arrives the small purple flowers really make you go wow with this plant. Fun fact - it's common name is Tawhiwi which is just such fun to say.
An absolute must for a Winter Garden is the hellebore – Try ‘Double Ellen Pink’ or ‘Anemone Pink’ for beautiful winter & spring flowers and if pink's not your thing then 'Anemone Slaty Blue' or 'Anemone Green' will be for you! Hellebores looks spectacular planted up on their own or as part of a bigger display and would look stunning in the Low Wide Cretan Planter.
Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart's Tongue Fern)
A bold native evergreen fern that’s fantastic for adding gorgeous year-round colour. It thrives in shady spots and is a hardy thing withstanding temperatures as low as -20c (Just like our pots!). The elegant fronds being intrigue and character to your space all year round especially during Winter. They're low maintenance too, just remove dead and tatty fronds for a spectacular looking plant from Jan through to December. As a spreader, the pot pair for this has to be the Hylas Planter, and what a fun feature it would be!
Mostly evergreen perennials, the heuchera has an impressive variety span with many different colours to suit all palettes. A firm favourite is the 'Georgia Peach' with its sweet coloured leaves, but if dark and moody is more your vibe we'd highly recommend the Heuchera micrantha Palace Purple sporting deep burgundy leaves year round and delicate pink flower stems during the Summer months. And mostly evergreen? we hear you say, in the coldest of climates the plant will take on a deciduous nature but being a hardy thing up to around -15c , we're talking very very cold indeed! Heuchera make an excellent underplanting for a patio tree and the two combined would look esquisite in a large Dante Italian Cube Planter.
Last but not least is the Erysimum. It is simply too hard a task to pick just one or even a couple of favourites as there are too many amazing colours to indulge in (Not to mention their fabulous fragrance!) but we endured the task just for you and here are two must haves for your garden. Firstly is the ‘Sun-Kissed Amethyst’ , we just LOVE the colour and then it has to be ‘Bowles Mauve’ for its hardiness and longevity of floral colour (up to 6 months of the year)! Both these varieties and all the others in the family would look incredible in the Botticelli Italian Bowl (Go large), they'd make a real pretty patio feature!
I mean what a line up of plants that are a must have in your garden to give you that all year round and Winter joy! Hayloft Plants have an incredible nursery in Worcestershire that houses so many stunning varieties, so do check them out and give them a follow on the old Instagram if you're over there.
